CRYPTORIUM /Chris Newman-Sara it is quite an honor, how was your holidays? SARA KARLOFF-Our holidays were quite delightful and hectic at the same time.We had family here and then left for two weeks in the Antartic on a National Geographic Icebreaker ship expedition which was glorious. We just returned home and I am still buried in dirty laundry and paperwork. |

CN-I was talking with a friend/former US serviceman,Kenneth Olsen, who was on holiday in England, and found himself at "Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem Pub"in Nottigham, and recalled a picture of your fathers there.
KARLOFF-That certainly is an "off the wall" question. The only connection I can think of is that a close friend of my father's,Bernie Coleman, owned a series of pubs and my father loved to help open them. That might explain the photo there. Also my father was a huge cricket fan and went to every match he could, and did so with Bernie often, and that could also explain the photo if the pub was frequented by cricketers. |

CN-In "Gods and Monsters" actor Jack Betts gave a chilling cameo billed as "Elder Karloff",what did you think? KARLOFF-I thoroughly enjoyed Gods and Monsters and thought a tribute to James Whale was long overdue.I felt that the portrayal of my father was really well done. |
|
CN-According to an interview I read with Carroll Borland,in response to the Tim Burton film "Ed Wood",Boris and Bela were perfectly good friends? KARLOFF-As far as I know my father and Bela had a professional respect for each other and worked together on 7 films. Each had his own personal interests off screen, one being English, and the other Hungarian, but any rivalry wa a media hype far more than a reality.I personally attribute the words that came out of Bela's mouth in "Ed Wood" to Tim Burton and the writer's rather than Bela.I never met Bela SR,but Bela Jr. is a friend of mine and a gentleman through and through. |

CN-Of the actors that tried to fill the shoes,no pun intended,of the Frankenstein monster,Chaney,Lugosi...how do you feel about the Glenn Strange portrayal? KARLOFF-I never have seen any of the Frankenstein films other than the 3 originals and of course Young Frankenstein,so I can't comment on any of the other actor's performances.I must admit, these are very good questions by the way. |
|
CN-Thank you...Four words.....Deniro as The Monster? KARLOFF-I always enjoy Robert Deniro in any role, and I think his Frankenstein is exceptional for the way it followed Mary Shelley's book. |
|
CN-Sara it truly has been an honor, and thank you...If I may,2 in 1...Scariest movie???and...The Misfits??? KARLOFF-The Wizard of OZ,and The Misfits are great favorites of my grandchildren,Thank you Chris. |
